A little less security theatre

Posted in Uncategorized by Simon Bisson on September 21, 2006

Just in time for our next international jaunt, the current hand luggage restrictions on flights from the UK are being eased.

Hand baggage restrictions imposed in the UK after an alleged terrorist plot to attack airliners are to be eased from Friday, the government has said.

Passengers will still only be allowed one piece of luggage but the maximum size permitted will increase to that of a small roller-suitcase.

[…]

The new size limit for carry-on luggage will increase to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 17.75in x 9.85in approx).

Here’s the full announcement from the DTI’s web site.

So we’re now allowed to take on bags that are 20% bigger than they were before?

Should I feel 20% less safe now, or safer because the Home Office has told me that this is now safe?

Having nearly been turned round at Stansted on Sunday since my bag was close to the limit, I must say that all this security theatre is getting quite wearing.
