If you want to use Google’s new embeddable maps on LJ…

Posted in Uncategorized by Simon Bisson on August 22, 2007

…you can’t.

While LJ lets most media sites that use an OBJECT tag to embed in an entries HTML, Google is using an IFRAME to host its maps. As part of its defence against cross-site scripting attacks LJ blocks IFRAMEs from any entry HTML.

So no Google Maps for you…

(also no Popfly, nor Google Mashups, nor – the list goes on…)

Are there any mapping systems that are embeddable in LJ?

OTOH, WTF does Google (purveyors of crappy client-side coding to the masses) use an <iframe> for this anyway?

Google: great people with a smart database, but their HTML / JavaScript / AJAX work is a pile of suck.

I haven’t tried it in this case, nor do I know what browsers this works with, but the object tag supports embedding another webpage (or potentially a frameset) within the object area. This intermediate page could, in turn, be a gateway for other content (all of which strikes me as a weakness in blocking iframes).
