Get yer podcast NPR here!

Posted in Uncategorized by Simon Bisson on September 6, 2005

NPR has put together a list of 130 show excerpts that are being timeshifted via RSS.

It’s still an experiment, so no full shows at present, while they try and understand bandwidth and demand. Perhaps they should mix podcasting and bittorrent…

The topic sort is probably the best way to find the shows you want. I’ve used it to pull up a list of the available literary shows.

(Still no “Car Talk”.)

Others are already working on such things. Biggest problem right now is the bad reputation that bittorrent has in the public mind. Hopefully that will change and things will move forward.

But podcasting is so much more than repackaged radio shows…

True. Much of the time it’s no better than repackaged hospital radio… 🙂

(Actually I approve of the concept. I just find it unusable thanks to one huge flaw – there’s no way of indexing it.

And that makes it a time sink for me, and for most people. While Blinkx have a podcast-level indexing tool, it’s not easy for them to publish the indexes due to licensing restrictions… But how else will people find the important information in ‘casts without spending hours a day under neath their headphones?)

It’s an interesting idea, but is that really what podcasting (or whatever you want to call it) is about? I’m not sure it is.

For me, it’s a way to spend time in the car listening to something I want to listen to, not what the traditional broadcasters want me to listen to. If time is precious I check the show notes to see if the content is likely to be interesting, if not, I just hit play and skip if it doesn’t grab me. Indexing down to the actual minute wouldn’t be of any help as there is no way to ffw on the iPod, so it’s an all or nothing experience.

Only time will tell how successful a medium it is, but Podshow and their investors are obviously thinking it’s going to be big.
