2031

The Pokia folk have a new name…

Hulger. And their retro-handset is now the P*Phone.

A press release just dropped into my mailbox, noting that the handsets will be on sale in Selfridges and in Hoxton from June 1st.

The pink P*Phone looks quite cute, though I think I prefer the green…

They even have a a manifesto (of sorts) :

Mr Hulger loved his leather armchair. Every night he would wind up his grandfather clock. He drove a nineteen fifties Opel around Denmark up until the day he died. He felt a connection to these objects; they reflected who he was. He understood the value of things.

Cute, but I think I prefer my headsets a little smaller.

Mind you, I seem to be carrying three phones most days now.

    It’s probably hackable with a DECT board…

There is a part of me which really wants a wireless Ericofon. Hell, I wonder if SonyEricsson could resurrect the design but with cellular-internals?

They were horrible to use though. Great sound quality (and in those days, that was a rarity) but they were _so_ heavy they made your arms ache.

I’m rather sad now that my old Motorola 8500X talking-brick mobile phone [complete with 10-digit red LED] got thrown out a while back. It would have been pleasantly-retro to have reverse engineered a modern phone into that.

An uncle of mine has still got an old British Telcom “Steel” briefcase-sized portable phone – this is the 10-watt briefcase-full-of-lead-acid-battery from about 1986. He kept it in service well after TACACS-style phones became ubiquitous because it was the only thing which allowed him to call home from his yacht within UK territorial waters. Now he has Inmarsat.

That pink phone is painful to see.

The pink one looks like it comes from the Sindy range, the khaki from Action Man. Very bizarre…

I’d like a candlestick version for the car, so I can pretend to be John Steeed.
